Stand-up comedy perfect for self-professed sassy mouth

Lisa Landry grew up in Harvey, La., a small town where she says the only thing to do on a Friday night was go to Dairy Queen or make a baby. It's no surprise the sassy blond left small-town life behind after high school. She moved to New York with dreams of being on stage, but she thought it would be in plays rather than stand-up.

"I wanted to go to theater school," Landry said last week. "I came here and I wasn't getting that much work as an actor so I thought I'd try stand-up. I found out I loved it. I always loved watching comedians on television but I never thought I would be one."

Landry soon realized comedy was the perfect fit for her personality. "I had all the symptoms," she said. "I have a sassy mouth, disrespect for authority and an aversion to sunlight and a steady paycheck."

Landry, who is making her first appearance at Wiley's Comedy Nightclub this weekend, is a fixture on the New York comedy circuit, but she's cut back on touring since the birth of her son 14 months ago.

"I just do the occasional fun clubs, the ones outside of New York that are really, really wonderful to work," Landry said. "I've been to Cincinnati a few times to Go Bananas. That's a wonderful room. It's friendly and it's not pretentious. I appreciate that. I'm looking forward to coming to Wiley's. It has an excellent reputation.

"New York is very different from Ohio," she continued. "You might go up two or three times a night here at different clubs. And I tend to get a lot done between the shows when my son's not around to distract me. I'm lucky because I'm not like most women who have to go for an eight-hour shift. I can leave the house and be home in three hours."
